Somalia has adopted a new transition plan to replace the African Union Mission in Somalia. AMISOM will now be replaced with ATMIS, the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia. The new peacekeeping outfit will have a phased approach to the drawdown and the ultimate withdrawal of AU peacekeepers in Somalia and hand over of security operations to Somali national forces by December 2024.
CGTN’s Coletta Wanjohi sought more details on the new mission from Bitania Tadesse. Tadesse is the program director of Amani Africa, a think tank with specialization on the African Union Peace and Security council.
